Classes and Programs

Basic Backpacking

Every spring, the Section offers a Basic Backpacking Course, taught by volunteer instructors from the Section. The course includes three, two-hour evening sessions (6:30 - 8:30), plus a weekend backpack field trip. The evening sessions cover topics ranging including buying a backpack, wilderness safety, minimum-impact hiking and camping, map & compass, and dealing with backcountry hazards and emergencies. Three weekend overnight outings give participants a chance to try out their new skills under the watchful eyes of the instructors, plus receive instruction in such field skills as operation of backpack stoves, bear-bagging, and use of map and compass.

Lightweight Backpacking

In April 2012, the Section will present our popular advanced class for experienced backpackers introducing lightweight and ultralight backpacking. The course will consist of two intensive, two-day classroom sessions over one weekend, plus a weekend field trip. Topics include lightweight philosophy, wilderness safety, commercial and home-made gear, trip planning, and more.
